Swami Satyeswarananda Giri (1941-2017) was a Kriya Yoga master and scholar who dedicated his life to re-establishing the original Kriya Yoga teachings of Shyama Charan Lahiri Mahasay.

Here are some key details about his life and work:

Early Life and Training:

  1. Born in Bengal, India.
  2. Received instruction and training in Kriya Yoga from Swami Satyananda Giri (1896-1971), a direct disciple of Swami Sri Yukteswar Giri and a close childhood friend of Paramahansa Yogananda.
  3. Earned an MA in Philosophy (specializing in Vedanta) and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Calcutta.

Monastic Life and Himalayan Retreat:

  1. Entered the swami order shortly before the passing of his guru, Swami Satyananda Giri.
  2. Embarked on a solitary spiritual retreat to the Himalayas, where he claimed to have spent time with the legendary Kriya Yoga master, Babaji Maharaj, at Dunagiri Hill.
  3. Lived in caves and a small hut, deepening his Kriya Yoga practice and receiving further teachings from Babaji.

Mission and Teachings:

  1. Claimed to have received the mandate from Babaji to re-establish the authentic Kriya Yoga lineage of Lahiri Mahasay.
  2. Believed that Paramahansa Yogananda, while a great yogi, had deviated from the original Kriya Yoga system by teaching only parts of it.
  3. Authored numerous books on Kriya Yoga, including commentaries on classical scriptures and biographies of Kriya Yoga masters.
  4. Founded the Sanskrit Classics publication house to make original Kriya Yoga literature accessible to the English-speaking world.

Key Contributions:

  1. Preservation and dissemination of the original Kriya Yoga teachings.
  2. Scholarly works on Vedanta philosophy and Yoga.
  3. Inspiration to countless seekers on the path of Kriya Yoga.

Note: Some of Swami Satyeswarananda Giri’s claims, such as his encounters with Babaji, are considered mystical experiences and may not be verifiable through conventional means. However, his dedication to Kriya Yoga and his contributions to its understanding are widely acknowledged
